Smoke Deflectors Again!
11/04/2022
  Highslide JS
The smoke deflectors are fully assembled so Chris has cleaned up the platework ready for Ashley to get a coat of primer on. Meanwhile, Ashley is painting a couple of stands which we will use to store the deflector plates on.
Last week we took delivery of a test piece of cast steel. The bogie axle cannon boxes have completed stage 1 machining which is to machine the surfaces where the manganese steel face and side liner plates will be welded. As we are welding 2 dissimilar materials together, we need to develop a weld procedure. The cast steel test piece and some surplus manganese steel will be used to prove the weld procedure. Once that is complete, the liners will be welded into place and then we can schedule stage 2 machining of the cannon boxes.

More Fitted Bolts
19/04/2022
  Highslide JS
Another batch of fitted bolts from generic Engineering passed through Goods Inwards today. These bolts are for the critical main frames/frame extensions/firebox support stretcher area. All of the bolts have been manufactured to give a drive fit in the drilled and reamed holes in the frames. You can see the different letters relating to the different dimensions on the bolt heads.

Preparing for Riveting
25/04/2022
  Highslide JS
Once the May bank holiday is out of the way, we are aiming to start riveting the front buffer beam area. All the components are in stock. Today we ran some final checks to make sure that the frames were parallel. We found that they were slightly tapering towards the front so the spreader bar was used to push them apart slightly while John uses the calipers to check the dimension is correct.
