Highslide JS The bogie spring cradle plates are in production at Tyler Bros Ltd in Sutton in Ashfield. The bogie spring cradle is a compensation beam running fore and aft along each side of the bogie frame plates. The ends of the cradle sit in cups on the top of the axleboxes. The leaf spring sits inside the cradle and is upside down compared to a car leaf spring. The cradle plates would originally have been formed by pressing between formers as it is not flat being wider in the centre to accommodate first the leaf spring itself and then wider again to accommodate the spring buckle. To manufacture the cradle in the traditional way would have been very expensive. So the plates will be machined from a solid block of steel. To avoid stress and distortion in the plate, the plates are being roughly machined to size first and then heat treated to stress relieve. In the photo the first (of 4) plates has been heat treated and final machining is in progress.

Axlebox Guides - Stage 1 machining complete. Note that the left hand set are the outer guides. The right hand set are handed and the top holes have deep countersinks. Countersunk head bolts are used here to avoid fouling the spring cradle. Stage 2 machining will take place once the guides have been fitted to the bogie frame.

These are the spring cradle brackets which will be fitted into the spring cradle plates. The ends of the main suspension springs rest on these brackets. The round pins will be welded into the cradle plates.

The bogie spring cradle plates have been received from Tyler Bros and they've made an impressive job of them. Here Keith and Alan go through our Goods Inwards inspection procedure

The bogie frame plates had been manufactured a long time ago. Unfortunately we were unable to track down any paperwork for them, e.g. Material Certificates. With reluctance we decided that they had to be scrapped and new plates procured. Fortunately, CTL Seal agreed to sponsor the plates and these are the plates after being cut to shape.

The bogie stretcher set up on stands for assembly. The outer ends haven't been painted as we need to weld on the grease nipple plates for the lubrication system.
