Highslide JS We had 2 hind beams in stock which have been buried under other components for a long time. It was time to get them out and work out which was the best one. The hind beam will need to go for Non Destructive testing as we have no paperwork for it.
Highslide JS 17 August 2020 - Testing of the fabrication process is complete and the components have been moved to the machine shop.
Highslide JS The fitting of the frame extensions has commenced. Sections of angle iron have been welded to the top and bottom of the frame extensions to preserve alignment. The screw jack pillars are to ensure that the lower face of the extensions is set to the correct relative height to the bottom of the main frames.
Highslide JS The length of the frames is becoming more evident. The screw jack with the measuring pole has been set so that it is the same height as the bottom of the main frames. This is the key dimension to ensure that the rear of the frame extensions is set to the right height.
Highslide JS A side on view of the assembly. You can see the datum point marked by a dowel in the hole. The frame extension assembly has ben pivoted around this point to set the correct height at the rear of the frame extensions.

Highslide JS Spring 2023

If you haven't read it already, you should read the Mk3 dragbox topic in the Construction >> Design section. We discovered that British Railways had developed a new dragbox design in 1959. This had been fitted to the 2 Britannias. After a lot of debate, we decided that we would have to replace the dragbox that we had built and build the new dragbox. Essentially the red drawbar is connected to a yellow extension passing through the front plate of the dragbox where it is connected to a Spencer Moulton drawbar spring. This comprises of a number of circular steel plates with rubber rings bonded to the surface of the plates.
Highslide JS May 2023

CTL Seal were contracted to fabricate the dragbox. Here are the various plates ready for welding to commence. The circular plate is at the bottom of the dragbox - the pony truck centring pin will be bolted to this plate.
Highslide JS July 2023
