Senior Engineer / Railway Engineering Lead (Voluntary Role)
The Standard Steam Locomotive Company, a registered charity, is seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Engineer / Railway Engineer to help lead the exciting new-build project for the missing BR Standard Class 6 locomotive, 72010 Hengist.
This is a unique opportunity to play a leading role in one of the most significant heritage railway engineering projects in the UK and help create a lasting legacy within the preservation movement.
This is an engineering led project and you will be working alongside a dedicated team of engineers, suppliers, and volunteers at the Hengist Works based within Diamond Group, Sheffield; the successful candidate will help drive the project forward through its next stages of construction. We hope this individual will eventually take on a wider leadership role within the organisation, including becoming a Director and joining the Council of Management.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting and leading engineering activities across the project
- Approval of specifications and drawings
- To work to the requirements of the railway industry for the safe operation, certification and registration of new build rail vehicles.
- Coordinating with suppliers, contractors and volunteers
- Helping deliver work to agreed timelines and project plans
- Contributing practical engineering solutions and problem-solving
- Taking a hands-on approach within the works environment
- Supporting the long-term strategic development of the project
About You
- Strong engineering background
- Experience of the process for design, procurement and manufacture of parts
- Understanding of the use of 21st century engineering techniques (CAD, FEA, FMEA,etc)
- Knowledge of steam locomotives, railways or heavy engineering is desirable, but not essential
- Willingness to learn
- Organised and able to work to plans and deadlines
- Positive attitude with a flexible and proactive approach
- Strong practical and problem-solving skills
- Enthusiastic about heritage engineering and teamwork
