Highslide JS A second sander is used to form the inside of the curve
Highslide JS Finally, a check to ensure that they fit the pattern correctly. Ruth now needs to repeat for the other end.
Highslide JS While Ruth was working on the transfer ports, Tony was working on the valve cylinder pattern. On the photo, the extension towards the camera is a pattern makers "print". This will form a recess in the sand mould to support the ends of the valve cylinder core - the sand mould that makes the air space in the cylinder. The pattern needs to be the same shape as the core. First Tony checks the template against the pattern.
Highslide JS Next Tony assembles the 2 halves of the pattern and uses the template to check for a fit. This shows the surplus material that needs to be removed.
Highslide JS One half of the pattern has been cleaned up with an oscillating saw ready for an application of filler.
Highslide JS Filler applied. This will be smoothed off after the Xmas break. Meanwhile Tony can continue working on the Valve cylinder core box ends which he can do in his own workshop. Tony passes on a Merry Christmas to all our readers
Highslide JS Tony needs to make the ends of the valve cylinder core box. The photo shows a couple of bits of 'scrap' shelving being glued together to form one of the core box end caps. Each end cap then has one of the pieces of shaped yellow pine screwed to it to make up the complete end cap in the same manner as the motion cylinder core box.
Highslide JS The ends are cut to size and trial fitted into the core box.
Highslide JS If you return to the photo 5 above this one, you will see a slight curve on the template for the valve cylinder pattern that needs to be formed on that pattern.A similar curved recess is needed in the core box ends. This supplies the necessary "draw" so that it is possible to remove the sand mould from the core box.
Highslide JS The end boards are carefully planed to create the correct curved recess.
