Bogie Cannon Box Spring Pads
13/02/2023
  Highslide JS
These 4 bogie cannon box spring pads have been manufactured by Alpenbury Precision Engineering in Rotherham. These fit into recesses on the top of the cannon boxes and the pivot pins at the ends of the bogie spring cradle sit in the cups. They are just over 73mm in diameter and the centre is a flat circle at just under 8mm in diameter. These will be fitted to the cannon boxes when they return from South Devon

More Drilling and Reaming

We have now started to drill and ream the bolt holes for the fitted bolts that will secure the frame plates to the central bogie stretcher. In the photo, the stretcher is upside down so that gravity helps to seat the frame plate on the stretcher. In order to ensure that the frame plate does not move when we drive in the fitted bolts, temporary M24 bolts have been fitted in all of the 1 inch holes. On the top row, you can see from the plain bolt heads that we have installed 3 hex head bolts and Mike is reaming the fourth one. Other bolts in the frames need to have countersunk heads to avoid the bolt head fouling the bogie spring cradle which lies just outside the frames.

Bogie Wheelsets - Tyre Turning (1)
20/02/2023

Latest pictures from South Devon Railway Engineering, showing one of the bogie wheelsets for Hengist being turned to final diameter and profile. Once the axles have been given a final Non Destructive Test, they will be ready for despatch back to CTL Sheffield. Before the wheels come back to Sheffield, they will be treated with a rust inhibitor and will not look as shiny!

The final stage in a long journey to produce these wheelsets. We started with Timken assembly drawings of the cannon axleboxes. Although these showed the outlines of the internal components, we have not been able to obtain detailed drawings for the internal components - apart form the bearings which are still readily available. We drew up our own drawings for these components and had them checked by Timken. We feel that the Hengist Engineering team have passed a significant milestone with the completion of the bogie wheelsets. Now we need to think about doing it again, but bigger, for the driving wheel cannon boxes!
