On the weekend of the 16th and 17th June 2012 Geoff Turner, Graham Ashton and Sean McKerchar, of our engineering team, visited Ian Riley and Son (Bury) to assess the frames. With the locomotive now destined for the mainline additonal checks are required.

The photo shows one of the main frames being prepared for non-destructive testing (NDT) of the welds between the frame plate and horn guides. Both frames were measured with a Faro arm and the horn guide welds inspected. All of this extra work is in preparation for Ian Rileys to commence erecting the frames once the combined stretchers have been cast and machined. The Faro Arm was made available by Tata Steel Scunthorpe Works with the Faro’ing being carried out by Tata’s Engineering Metallurgist Mr Steve Moir. The NDT Testing was carried out to a spec prepared by Mr Max George – Fellow of the Institute of Welding – the actual NDT being performed by Mr Steve Osman of Frazer-Nash NDT Ltd based at Irlam near Manchester. Thanks must be expressed to Tata for the loan of the Faro Arm, Frazer Nash NDT, and Ian Riley’s Mr Colin Green and Mr Chris Birmingham who assisted during the weekend.
