Toolbox Door Pegs
04/09/2023
  Highslide JS
Not everything on a steam locomotive requires heavy duty machining. These are 2 door pegs for the cab toolboxes. They are attached to a chain and ensure that the doors stay shut

Rear Damper Door Operating Handwheel
11/09/2023
  Highslide JS
The original batch of Clans had 3 damper doors on the front of the ashpan operated by a single handwheel in the cab. The Lot 242 Clans, like 71000 Duke of Gloucester, had an additional damper door on the rear of the ashpan. Neil has been fettling the damper door handwheels - this is the one for the rear doors. The eye on the left hand side of the operating shaft is connected to a right angled bellcrank which pivots on a bracket bolted to a pad on the cab side. We have the drawing for the pad; now we need to get it made and welded to the side of the cab,

Pony Truck Centring Pin
11/09/2023
  Highslide JS
A contrast in sizes! At the bottom is the item from last week's news item - the door peg for the cab toolboxes. Today we received the pony truck centring pin form Alpenbury Engineering in Rotherham. At the left hand end is a 6 inch by 5/8 inch washer secured by a cotter. The right hand side (or top when in position) is bolted to the bottom of the dragbox. The shaft passes through a slot in the rear beam of the pony truck frame. Within the beam, the centring pin passes through a bush in a crosshead. On both sides of the cross head are a pair of coil springs. As the locomotive goes into a curve, the centring pin will try to compress one of the pair of springs, this steadies the locomotive entering curves. As the locomotive leaves a curve, the springs will act on the centring pin helping the locomotive return to the correct alignment. Immediately after this photo was taken, it was painted in a corrosion protection coating.

Pad for Rear Damper Door Gear
25/09/2023
  Highslide JS
3 items into Goods Inwards today. The first item is a pad that needs to be welded onto the fireman's side of the cab. The lot 242 Clans differed from the first batch in that they had an additional ashpan damper door on the rear of the ashpan. This has its own operating handwheel and is close to the setup on 71000 - Duke of Gloucester. This pad is for the bell crank bracket in front of the handwheel. 3 holes need to be drilled and tapped for the bell crank bracket and then it can be welded to the cab side (inside).

Hinge Pins for Fireman's Seat
25/09/2023
  Highslide JS
Second item into Goods Inwards are these 2 hinge pins which are needed for the fireman's seat. These were made by one of our members.

Glass for Windscreen
25/09/2023
  Highslide JS
Final item into Goods Inwards today is the glass for the windscreen. Windscreens are fitted on the outside of both sides of the cab between the 2 side windows. We now need to procure some U shaped rubber packing to go between the glass and the frame. The glass is laminated glass.
